« Under siege, photography and its usage”, at the Chapelle des Petits Augustins des Beaux-Arts de Paris, which re-opened after 200 years for this occasion. Organized by Lesly Hamilton (1), professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris and founder of the Fine Art Photography department there (Atelier d’Expression Photographique), this exhibition displayed her students’ achievements in her workshop, the first time that photographic art was exhibited at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. This exhibition was supported by an introductive text by Jean-Claude Lemagny, published in the catalogue “Etat de siege” (Under siege) released by the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, 1988.
(1) Lesly Hamilton became a professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1983. Her arrival marks the entry of both photography and a woman professor at the school – the second, along with the drawing professor in the UV option. She taught at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris from October 1983 to December 2001.
(2) Jean-Claude Lemagny was the curator in charge of contemporary photography at the Etching cabinet in the French National Library from 1968 to 1996.
